Interpersonal racism happens in how people interact with each other. It’s about individuals expressing racial prejudice, bias, or hate through their words, tone, or actions toward someone because of race, whether in public or private settings. This is different from other forms that operate at larger levels: institutional racism involves policies and practices within organizations; structural racism is the broad system of practices across society that produce racial inequalities; and internalized racism refers to beliefs and biases people hold about race inside their own minds. In short, interpersonal racism is the day-to-day, person-to-person expression of racism.
